The intro abstract algebra course I'm in is using Rotman as a textbook. It's more a reference book than a textbook. It's filled with theorems, proofs, and exercises (and little else). I like a "chatty" textbook that tries to give the "big picture". Rotman has short explanations (if any) and few examples. It's mainly proof after s: 5. While its perhaps a bit more basic than some of the others posted here, Charles C. Pinter's "A Book of Abstract Algebra" is really a great book for both a first course in abstract algebra and a first course in proofs. The book is divided into

Rotman's book is a standard for first courses in Abstract Algebra. The book is easy to read and includes plenty of problems to work on. He even includes several standard syllabi in the preface, depending on the type of course that may be taught with it.
It begins with some number theory, then goes into the traditional group and ring by: • Flexible presentation – May be used to present both ring and group theory in one semester, or for two-semester course in abstract algebra.
• Number theory – Presents concepts such as induction, factorization into primes, binomial coefficients and DeMoivre's Theorem, so students can learn to write proofs in a familiar context.

If in your other math classes, you only used your book for homework problems, then you probably won’t need this book. With a subject as traditionally difficult as abstract algebra, it is nice for students to be able to see that the reason for proving a theorem is to solve a particular problem, rather than because it is simply the next theorem in the book.
As the book's title indicates, a large portion of the book. The whole book is designed for a year course.
Chapters 1 and 2 are appropriate for a first course and Chapters 3, 4 and 5 can be served as a more advanced course. There are many topics that, in my opinion, they are worth mentioned. I try to break each topic in step-by-step and scatter it as a “Project” throughout this book.
